Healing Support Services Volunteer

Louis D Brown Peace Institute, Dorchester, MA

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute (LDBPI) is a center of healing, teaching and learning for families and communities impacted by murder, trauma, grief and loss. Our commitment is to transform society’s response to homicide so all families are treated with dignity and compassion. Our programs and services are grounded in the Centers for Disease Control’s social-ecological framework that interventions are needed at multiple levels in order to interrupt cycles of violence. The LDBPI is recognized across the state and country for the best practices in the field of homicide response. With over 25 years of experience, the LDBPI continues to innovate and grow.

Description of Project/Purpose of Assignment:

The Healing Support Services Volunteer’s purpose is to provide assistance to the Healing Support Services team to develop healing groups, workshops and presentations, offering healing techniques to survivors of homicide victims, service providers and families of incarcerated and previously incarcerated individuals.  

Responsibilities:

The Healing Support Services Volunteer will be responsible for working closely with the Healing Support Services Manager and Peace Fellow Intern.

  • Develop agendas, surveys and evaluations
  • Research Expressive Therapy ideas
  • Capture sign-in information at groups, workshops and events and enter that data into our client database
  • Order supplies for healing workshops
  • Support with preparation and breakdown of healing sessions

Reports to:

Healing Support Services Manager Time Commitment: 8 hours weekly, inclusive of some evening and Saturday hours, and occasionally additional hours for special events or training. Qualifications Needed:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the LDBPI’s values, mission statement and organizational culture Interest in facilitating support groups and workshops
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills 
  • Self-motivation, ability to work independently and with a team
  • Experience with MS Office and Google Suite applications

Memorial Button Production Volunteer

POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

One of the services that the LDBPI provides to families of homicide victims is memorial button design, production and donation. The LDBPI also creates buttons for families whose loved ones die by natural causes or accidents, for a small fee to families who request them.

This role is to provide support to the Survivor Outreach Services team creating buttons for either deaths by homicide, suicide, overdose or COVID-19, or of natural causes or accidents. This will involve printing out paper button inserts, cutting them, and pressing them manually, using a button press machine. Training will be provided by a LDBPI staff member.

Based at: The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute 15 Christopher Street, Dorchester, MA 02122

Reports To: Survivor Outreach and Support Manager

Start Date: Immediately

HOURS: Up to 4 hours per week on Thursdays

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Desire to serve the survivor community with dignity and compassion
  • Ability to accurately cut circular paper button inserts
  • Ability to use manual button press machine which requires use of hand, arm and shoulder 
  • Ability to participate in button production training

Document Branding and Formatting Volunteer

The Document Branding and Formatting Volunteer’s role and responsibility is to update our internal and external LDBPI-branded documents with our new logo and updated branding format and language, following our organizational style guide. Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite is required. Knowledge in Adobe Suite is recommended.

Reports to:

  • Communication and Marketing Manager

Time Commitment: 

Approximately 4-6 hours per week until all materials updated-approximately one to two months

Qualifications Needed:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the LDBPI’s values, mission statement and organizational culture
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivation, ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience with MS Office and Google Suite applications
